Coffee is perfect for a first date. Low pressure, easy to leave, easy to extend if it's going well. Anyone who calls it cheap wants a performance, not a person.
I actually prefer coffee. Dinner first dates are a 2-hour hostage situation if there's no spark. Coffee says you're confident enough to just talk.
It's not the coffee, it's the energy. A thoughtful coffee beats a fancy dinner where you're on your phone.
